How we made the sky rain scrap (fairly)
Bolts, plates and whole engines fall in Scrap Dodge. Here is how we keep it hard but never cheap.
Scrap Dodge started with a silly question: what if the crane operator really didn't like your car?
You drag left and right at the bottom of the screen. Scrap falls from above. If it hits your car, the run is over. Easy to explain, surprisingly hard to make fair.
Three kinds of scrap
Not all junk falls the same way, and that's on purpose:
- Bolts are small and quick. They punish lazy dodging.
- Plates are wide and drop like a lid. You see them coming, but they cover a lot of road.
- Engines are big and heavy, and they get tossed up before they fall, so they hang in the air for a moment. Annoying? Yes. Readable? Also yes.
Hard, not cheap
The rule we kept coming back to: you should always know why you crashed. Everything falls from the top of the screen at a speed you can read, and we tune the scrap so there is a gap to find if you keep your eyes open. When it gets busy, the gap is still there. It's just smaller.
If a crash feels unfair, that is a bug, not a feature.
Getting better
Stay near the middle so you can break either way. Make small moves, not big swoops. And when an engine goes up, don't follow it with your eyes. Watch where it is going to land.
How long can you last? The clock at the top is the only score that matters.
